The AHL roster will have no requirements for positional players, it will simply serve as a farm system for any players the owner wants to keep. The AHL roster can hold up to 15 players at one time.
Any skater with less than 82 games played in the NHL is eligible to remain on the AHL roster. Players CAN be stashed on the AHL roster past that 82 game threshold if they have never been called up to the NHL fantasy active roster. Once they have been called up they can only be sent back down while they are under the 82 game threshold and must return to the active roster once they hit 82 games. The moment the player is called up, their contract begins and does not stop even if they are sent back down. All players selected in future rookie drafts are eligible for the AHL roster immediately. The same applies for goaltenders, except their game count is at 41 appearances, instead of 82 for skaters. The contract structure for rookies is explained in NHL Contract Details.
If you choose to release a player from your AHL roster, you are free to do so at no penalty AS LONG as they have never been called up to your NHL active roster. They will be immediately eligible for waiver wire during the season and free agency in the off-season.
Players signed in free agency that are under the threshold (82 GP for skaters, 41 appearances for goaltenders) can be sent down to the AHL roster until they hit the threshold and then must be either brought up to the active roster, traded, or bought out.
