The D-League roster will have no requirements for positional players, it will simply serve as a farm system for any players the owner wants to keep. The D-League roster can hold up to 10 players at one time.
Any player with less than 82 games played in the NBA is eligible to remain on the D-League roster. Players CAN be stashed on the D-League roster past that 82 game threshold if they have never been called up to the NBA fantasy active roster. Once they have been called up they can only be sent back down while they are under the 82 game threshold and must return to the active roster once they hit 82 games. The moment the player is called up, their contract begins and does not stop even if they are sent back down. All players selected in future rookie drafts are eligible for the D-League roster immediately. The contract structure for rookies is explained in NBA Contract Details.
If you choose to release a player from your D-League roster, you are free to do so at no penalty AS LONG as they have never been called up to your NBA active roster. They will be immediately eligible for waiver wire during the season and free agency in the off-season.
Players signed in free agency that are under the threshold (82 GP) can be sent down to the D-League roster until they hit the threshold and then must be either brought up to the active roster, traded, or bought out.
