If a player retires while under contract, the remaining contract will be cut in half in terms of monetary value and a roster spot will naturally be opened up by their absence.
Example: Bryce Harper retires with 2 years left on his deal. If his salary remaining is $10 million per year, the cap hit over the next 2 years will be $5 million per year, but the roster spot will be open to acquire another player.
