As of NFL 2016 and for all seasons that come, we will be implementing a season-ending injury pool. If a player is injured and out for the season, instead of using an in-season IR/DL slot, an owner will be able to "drop" that player from their roster and place them in the season-ending injury pool to use that roster spot. The owner will still have control over that player but will not need to use a roster spot on them. To be eligible for the Season-ending injury pool, there has to be a REPUTABLE report which informs that the player is indeed out for the season.
For example:
A pitcher has Tommy John surgery and will not return during the season. They are eligible for the season ending injury pool and will not effect the salary cap until they are healthy and return to the active roster.
